I have had this happen...and I think I know what happened, at least in my case.
The elemental was right in front of me, so I had everyone practicing their casting skills. While targeting one of these spells (paralyze I think) I thought I had selected the group of rapax in front of the elemental, but when the spell went off it was targeted at the elemental. I figure I slipped a bit on the mouse, or the animation shifted as I was clicking.
To avoid this I will now always click on the monster group name at the top of the screen. This is usually easier anyway, especially for bats and critters that shift around a lot.
