Training generally refers to the repetition of an action until a certain skill or set of skills is raised to a fairly high level.
I hate it. I tried it once with Knock-Knock on the vault and got bored after about +5 points in Earth realm. If I want to raise skills without doing it the "normal" way then I'll probably just go and use an editor. It saves time and gives the same result, though the only time I've done that wasn't for training but to give my party the Light Sword after trying for 2 days to get it.
Like Loudhy says, it's not even necessary to do it to win the game. In fact, it makes the game that much easier since you'll end up with skills beyond the power that the game expects of your characters' levels.
