Unlike Wiz 7, Wiz 8 doesn't allow you the choice of thrust versus swing, apart from the choice of weapon which may have one or both of these modes. In the case of both, I'm not sure how the game determines it, but I would imagine there's a certain amount of randomization involved, so increasing your number of attacks as you progress with dexterity and speed should also increase your chances for variation in your modes of attack as well. I'm afraid that's the best answer I can offer, but perhaps someone else here knows better!
Edit:
Just to clarify, assuming Wiz 8 is following the same formulas in regard to this as Wiz 7, the distinction between Thrust and Swing is that Thrust carries with it a -2 to hit, +2 to penetrate, and +1 damage compared with Swing.
