I don't think there's an answer to this question that will work the same for every party. I usually play with a bishop who doesn't use any spell picks at the beginning, which means I really won't have any idea how they'll do at least until Arnika. Some characters will be extremely weak against Gregor simply because they don't have even a remotely good weapon yet. Nonetheless, if you're relying less on magic and more on melee, Gregor may still be a reasonable test. Also, alot depends on your knowledge and experience in developing your characters. The party I abandoned at the Rift due to poor development actually had no trouble with Gregor. How was I to know early on that senses would be important for a ranger? LOL! So it seems to me that how and when you can test your party depends alot on the characters you play and your style of developing them.
