The Avenger, like most of the good stuff in this game, is a random drop with a low percentage of showing up. There's no way to tell if you'll get it from a chest, and it's hard to force it (or any other good item) to appear.
Goodies in chests are determined the first time you enter the area. So reloading after that (but before you open the chest) is useless. Many players have saved just before entering Bayjin, then make straight for the chest in the hut to see if they got the light sword (or something equally good), and if not, reload and try again.
