I always kill Kunar early and save before entering Mt Gigas. Then i run to the pressure plate, drop a dart or an arrow, do the combat and open the chest. If the sword's not there I reload.
Finding it in the other loacation was just a bonus for me.
PS. I didn't try too hard to get it this time since no one can use it anyway.
