The patch from Baldurdash make sit so that allignment doesnt matter, and most of the NPC conflicts that end in one of them leaving are solved...
and u NEED a good mage- ie. edwin (hes the only single class mage) and so if ur PC isnt a mage(or soreceror or whatever), Edwin is a nescesity.
And for INfo on finding the book of Kaza for Korgan- try this
