As to carrying stuff, that's what the other 5 characters in the party are for...
Really, which race you choose comes down to personal preference, but Faerie does have a couple of advantages that the Elf doesn't. Having spell points replenish faster is a big plus in my book and is well worth the lose of being able to carry more stuff.
