A very handy thing to do here is to have your thief, Jan in this case, set some traps in the first alcove. So if Shangalar teleports in, he will be severely damaged or even instantly killed if you're lucky. The battle will be lots easier once the lich is out of your way.
This works best with Yoshi's special snares though. Dunno if Jan will be as much help here.
Another time-proven tactic is to cast some delayed-blast fireballs into the main room around the table before you trigger the fight, but I guess your level is too low for that. Maybe you'll just have to wait a bit.
