The Retro dungeons are a big easter egg, to quote my web site:
Quote:
Below are maps for the three (3) easter egg dungeons that can be found in Wizardry 8. They are often referred to as "Retro Dungeons" because they appear in the classic grid format as used in the original Wizardry (Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord) and subsequent games. One thing often asked is, why are they called "easter eggs"? This is due to the fact they are not a part of the game, no dialog anywhere will inform the player of their existence, the only clue was the presence of three sets of six runes (or icons) which were to be found, plus a nearby object requiring a specific item.

Check out http://wiz8.web1000.com/RetroMaps.html for the details (note, the page includes "floor maps" to each dungeon, so don't scroll down the page if you'd rather not see them). Also, if you click on one of the maps, you'll get step-by-step instuctions on how to activate access to that dungeon.
