Thanks folks, that helped.
About a priest being good at combat, though: doesn't he get to use the same items as a bishop?
Also someone mentioned that bards don't benefit from powercast, but why then does my bard's powercast skill increase every so often after playing music? Surely a skill must be practised for it to increase?
While I'm asking about characters, what is the ranger's strength? There's a whole thread here in which people are discussing how close combat is more effective than ranged attacks, yet the ranger is a dedicated archer. Given the greater potential for dealing high amounts of damage in close combat, I'd think that it'd be better to have a fighter-type character who can also use a bow. In particular, a bard can use most items a ranger can, and can also use all those powerful instruments. In the manual in the summaries of each character type it gives a short, unbiased description of the character and for the bard it actually says something like 'this is a very powerful character'.
