You don't have to kill the king or anyone at the away camp. These days, I generally do the rescue just before heading to the Peak, so I have no need to return to the Rapax castle for anything at Ferro's.
Basically, I see the king, get the key, unlock the cages, recruit Drazic and Rodan, and portal out to Z'Ant. Works real well and is a great time-saver. Of course, if you're feeling bloodthirsty, you can stay and fight the Rapax. But you don't have to if you don't want to; there is no in-game effect.
You also can't go back to the camp after placing the artifacts. You need to carry at least two of the three doodads for the camp to appear. So better get em before heading off to the Peak if that's what you want.
