I have version 1.2.4 and this is how you store the things you can't drop.

Go into inventory and pick the item up, you can not drop it on the floor of course so exit inventory and put the item in a chest. Do the same with any items you can't drop but don't want to carry around with you all the time. It's tedious if you have a lot of things to store, but it's the only way I know of doing it.
