i've seen a number of posts to this effect, but i cant remember from who. but basically, the idea was to run the party at it's most difficult, and put out front a single fighter who will swing and swing and swing and swing, while the rest of the party keeps their opponents healed. that way, they can learn the most possible from a single combat.
the general consensus seems to be that learning is based on your two controlling stats (str and dex, for example) compared to your skill level (sword, for example). but no one has mentioned opponent level as a controlling factor... of course, since we're forced to reverse engineer to figure it out, it would be hard to be certain!
