bozo - i played for a year on an old p2 laptop with 32 mb ram and an 8mb graphics card. i found some frustration with slow graphics updates in some polygon-intensive areas of the wiz 8 world, but not enough to make me quit.
i then updated my lappie to a 2.0g p4 with 256mb ram and a 32mb nvidia graphics card and have had no problems. i suspect it's the graphics card that makes the most difference (because at the same time we upgraded the graphics card on my wife's machine and she experience similar improvement).
dalamar - i would concur with pyrates and starfire 100%. there are no perfect rpg games out there, and to some extent choosing a most preferred one will have a lot to do with the type of game you like to play.
wiz 8 strengths - easy to use, intuitive interface. fully customisable, player controlled character development. with 11 classes, 14 races, and 6 party slots, there is not only lots of scope for truly role-playing a theme but also tons of replayability possible. the character development system is subtle and complex, lending itself to realism. the world is big, the plot and sideplots challenging. the monsters auto-level to keep you from getting bored, so there's always a challenge (but dont take that to mean it never gets easy - some areas are capped so that you can breeze through after you've gained enough experience and if you develop your party right, you can be high powered for your level). it's a first-person, real time point of view during normal exploration, but during combat it goes to turn-based (or, to a more continuous flow if the player chooses).
weaknesses - well, the graphics are a bit dated, a bit polygonal. the weapon system has limitations (but not that will notice until you've played about a dozen times), and combat, because it is turn-based with multiple participants on each side, can be a bit slow. but all in all these are minor gripes and grossly outweighed by the positives.
if you commit yourself to a couple of hours of trial, i can almost guarantee you'll be hooked!
