If you use autosave, the game will save at the start and end of each combat. In this case, if the combat wents bad, you can press escape during combat, and exit to main menu. From there you can load the game at the start of the combat.
But this is a bug IMO. Shouldn't be exploited. I mean, if you want to play ironman, why should you want to reload.
BTW i use autosave because sometimes the game just exits after some hours of playing.
