i also did the hardware upgrade thing, purely for wizardry. extra ram and and higher video card ram seemed to be the biggest help.
however, i still run into thrashing problems when opening/closing maps and when shutting down. the bottom line, i think, is swap space. wizardry just loads a ***load of stuff into memory and your swap file can grow and grow. so faster discs, and defragging, can have a major impact. further, a disc utility that sorts swap space to the front of the disc (like norton) helped, too.
