You know, i've tried all that stuff before too (gamespy, etc.) but it never seems to work out. Tried doing that cable connection with a friend, but that failed too. If you want, I'd like to give it a go sometime to try and at least work out the mechanics of doing mulitplayer (though i'm going home in a week, and won't be back at my computer until early jan.)
