i had my ranger cast drain cloud (i entered a little late because i went to the rapax castle first.) after a while, it will take its toll, draining hp, stamina and especially sp. i agree that melee is very effective. if you us tinkerman's strategy, the best weapon i have ever found was the excalibur, but its also possible to get in the rapax castle. ive never gotten to light sword so im not sure how good it is.
acid bomb, toxic and death cloud will also work.
