To a large degree, it simply isn't worth it to try to get specific high-level items when opening chests:
1) Most of the chests are well inside an area, so you'd have to fight your way through the area from the initial entry again and again and again.
2) The highest-level items have *very* low probabilities of appearance; I've gotten Excaliber once in maybe 14 games taken to the point where I could open that chest. Same for a random-appearing Zatoichi Bo, though at least there you can always get the fixed one.
Likewise for high-level monster drops; the *Light**Sword* is also an item I've seen once in the last dozen+ games. Lower-level monster drops are quite a bit better; if you really need a Spirit Staff or some Spider Silk, you can save before fighting the fixed Oak Saplings or Giant Spiders in Trynton, try again if needed, and almost always get the item within a few combats.
The designers did a pretty good job of making it not worth your time to play "Reloading For Items", at least for the really high-level stuff. The always-available items, like Fang, Ivory Blade, Staff of Doom, The Mauler, and the like are plenty powerful for what you need to do; just consider the exotically powerful and vanishingly rare items to be a great, unexpected bonus if you happen to get them.
