Seems to me its important to cast it in the right spot: I think it works best if its in the enemys line of site. Also seems better against low int. attackers.
Faced with a slow moving enemy like gators or millipedes, cast it as far away as you can BUT in a spot where it will still be between you and them after they move. For fast movers like most flying critters, cast it very near yourselves.
Like Terror and blindness, the point of hypnotic lure is to lower the number of attackers going after you in a given round, which lessens the damage you take and gives your guys a chance to off them before they can strike you.
Its a very good fire magic trainer, and is also availble as a gadge item.
