Yeah, its a 'sticky' item: very hard to get rid of.
Be sure and check all individual's inventories: have personally misplaced many of the 'must haves' by putting them there instead of the group inventory.
If you have checked the spots otter reccomended as well as all the individual's inventories, the idol has probably been 'lost' by the game: its bugged out, so to speak.
In that case, hope you have a pre-idol savegame: this is one quest that is NOT optional.
