That's a combat option, click the little icon that shows your weapon to open the box where you can click on the empty hand, then a list will come up at the bottom, pick your instrument, it has to be in your Bard's personal inventory. It works like spells, you have to reactivate it every round you want to use it. Otherwise, the Bard will fight.
