Well, I think the two games are hard to compare. The story in BG2 is by far one of the very best outside of Planescape, as far as the classic RPGs go (by classic, I mean all the ones that have been around for the last ten years.. D&D PC games, Wizardry, Ultima, etc..)
BG2 is focused on following the D&D rules and tactical battles. Wizardry 8 also has tactical battles, but from a first person point of view. Your party's placement in the group is important. The battles in Wizardry 8 can be long, so if you don't like that aspect, you might not like W8.
Also, the graphics (outside the character models) really are very impressive, especially for a game that started development so many years ago. It didn't come out looking dated at all. I know graphics aren't as important in RPGs, but I must say, W8's are excellent.
There are a LOT more class/race combos to pick from. I am the type of person that really only plays a game once through, but I have found myself wondering what it would have been like to play with a different set of characters. It's funny, but BG2 is also the only other game that I have done this with.
W8 is pretty long. I have been playing for a few months, logging probably 7-10 hours a week off and on. Total time? You COULD spend hundreds of hours in W8, or probably whip through it in a week or two. It's somewhat non-linear, but there is always a main set of quests to follow as well, but some of these even are optional.
There is also that whole good/evil path thing, much like Might and Magic VII had. You can choose your path (and later there is even a bonus path to take, which I won't spoil). It's a little like playing Might and Magic 4 + 5 together to make the World of Xeen, to a lesser degree.
W8 is a huge game, and well worth the price. I enjoyed BG2 to the last drop, and will so with W8.
I hope this helped some.. I may have babbled on a bit.
