I think that the items in the chest are set the first time that you enter the area, and will not reset just because you entered the area again. If you don't like what you get, I think that you have to reload from before the first time that you enter the area, kill Nessie, etc. (which I'm highly tempted, cuz I'm not too pleased with my divinemail...I really wanted a cool sword or something.) I can't pop a light sword, either, and I've tried so many times that I'm just gonna go on.
