Ah yes, but what IF you had already squeezed past Crock earlier, using the 'running' trick and sacked that chest of its contents? Would your party member still appear? =)
The programmers probably figured that the only way to get to the chest is to kill Crock, and therefore there is no way to have the chest been emptied AND a party member missing, but you can squeeze past him without killing him.. so I'd be curious to know if there is another way..
