There are two ropes to climb in Trynton that are programmed in a different manner from the others. One doesn't respond to the mouse pointer at all; that one you have to practically fall down the hole before you trigger a dialog box asking if you want to use the rope. The one that everyone remembers and is writing about this time starts off rolled up the way a manually operated well bucket's rope was rolled up after you lowered it to be filled.
Again, you have to be fairly close to the edge when you click on the rolled rope. It doesn't work if you click on the short tag end of the rope that is hanging down, juat wait until after the rope unrolls and then click on the rope. It's pretty easy to find that rope hanging down later when you return to Trynton, and a lot more direct route up to the seventh bough for the return.
