The best combat gadget is probably the lightning rod found in the monastery. If you still have that, you can let Madras use that in combat.
Next best item is probably the port-o-potty, for noxious fumes.
I have never seen a double or triple shot xbow for sale anywhere in the game, nor have I ever seen one drop as a random item. So your best bet is to have Madras make them for you. And remember, only light crossbows can be merged.
