Gimli, I will have to disagree with you on the NPC's. I'm on my 5th game (but not through to the end yet currently lvl 18/20) I found that skipping the NPC's and hoarding all the points myself was more helpful. I found no anvantage in "slowing" levelling, but rather that I did better by gaining stats (int/dex/etc) as fast as I could.
I did however wait to level up, at least in the early going and that seemed to make life easier in the monastery. Also that way I waited until I had 3 spell picks and had added 3 level-ups worth of points to the primary (ie alchemy) skill area so I had better picks. Another point is to wait until you have had a chance to find all the books available before levelling and deciding if you want to pick any spells (or wait and save the pick till next time) That way you don'twate picks on spells you could have bought/found.
