I think the answer might vary depending on what level you are at.

My characters are level 15/16. I have a lord, ranger, Valeryie, samurai, bard and mage. The one with the most kills is the mage by far. That is due to his liberal use of area spells such as fire bomb, often responsible for taking out entire groups.

The bard has been quite useful as others have said. Her insanity and slow seem to be less effective against the monsters I am meeting resently though. Bagpipes was fun for a good while, but pretty much minor effect these days in comparison to her disabling music.

My SAM is pretty interesting -- except that she seems relutant to swap out her ranged bow for bloodlust and poison dagger even when enemys are fairly close. She ought to know that it is not that difficult to swap them back out again (or use ranged spells).

Most disappointing is the LORD. He barely seems to be contributing, but I'm told that he is just coming into his own and I should be more patient.

The Ranger is good for detecting goodies along the way and for ranged attacks.

The VAL does a decent job of healing and combat both.

All around -- its a team.
