It's better to take portal as a spell pick. That way, you get both set and return at once. If you read the book to get the spell, you only learn the one. So you need two books (Portals & Return) to make much use of it.
That may have beem changed in a later patch; I still have only Ascension Peak patched into my game, and there I would need both books to have the set.
