The only disadvantage would be for a Bishop.

If you are casting a spell that falls under multiple books, ie. wizardry and divinity, it will use the book with the higher skill. This also means that the book with the higher skill is the one that has the chance to improve.

It is fairly easy to work up alchemy by mixing potions/powders, but there isn't a similar way to get up wiz/psi/div, so what you probably want to do is spend points on wiz/psi/div and practice them with spells, use mixing to get your alchemy up, but make sure to keep it less than the other three, this should let your book skills rise quite quickly.
