You don't have to actually kill Nessie each time if you want to save yourself some hassles. What I did was

1) Save my game just outside the Bayjin Shallows to allow randomness
2) Save my game under a different name just after entering the Bayjin Shallows. I had my buff spells up and also cast Chameleon just before dropping down onto Nessie's area.

When I hit the ground, I headed to the right and can make it behind the rocks without Nessie seeing me. Normally I can make it all the way to the other end of the rocks without her spotting me. At that point if she didn't initiate combat, I did and sometimes I surprised her. I then ignored her completely and each round I did a flat-out run for the cave with the chest. I normally lost one or two characters by the time I got into the cave and waited for combat to end (it usually took a total of 5-6 combat rounds from start to finish). Once combat ended, normally with Nessie right outside the entrance to the cave, I would go over to the chest and open it to see what was inside.

If it wasn't something I wanted, I reloaded from step 1 and had only taken 5 minutes to get to that point since I didn't waste tons of time killing Nessie. If it was, I reloaded from step 2 but this time I killed Nessie instead of ignoring her. I ended up with five different saves post-Nessie that I then had to decide between as to what I wanted to keep. I ended up keeping the one with a Ring of the Road and Tinker's Carryall Band in it as well as an Amulet of Healing because I wanted those more than I wanted Excalibur. I don't remember how many times I ended up reloading from step 1 but it was under 30 I know so the total time spent to get what I wanted was maybe 2 hours tops.

Besides, when I got down to attack the Buccaneer Ghosts, I knew I could get myself a *Light Sword* or two if I played it right. I was correct and ended up with not one, not two, but FOUR *LS*, two of which I later sold so I could play with the Ivory Blade. (My four sword-wielders ended the game with 2 *LS*, the Ivory Blade and Bloodlust, which actually did more damage than the *LS* because of the Berserk-mode - especially since I didn't have any Fighters who could go Berk naturally).
