Nope, you have to sleep with Al-Sed to open the gate. To get the gear you need to talk to Surdan, Al-Adryian and Saydin in the Castle, they'll tell you what to do ... not sure how you managed to get to Al-Sed in the first place without the items, I didn't think Al-Adryian opened the way to her bed chamber
