Have to say that personally I've never found chameleon did a thing.
For instance, in the swamp when you round the corner and meet the Rayjin guarding the ... well, don't want to give too many spoilers
... then even with chameleon on they spot me the moment they come into view and at that point they're only just in "long" range.
