well... there are two approaches

if you use the non overlaping ones, your skill lv in each book will get higher at a more even rate, so long as you use spells of each book about the same.

If you use the oerlapping ones, one book will get much much higher than the other, no matter what skills you use.

basicly it works like this. when casting a spell contained in two books, the book you are more proficient(higher skill lv) in gets the bonus. So with books that overlap, you get one book progressing much faster. This means that you will develop one book at roughly the normal caster rate and one book slower (3 points a lv, as no points go into it), making you an effective mage while a somwhat less than semi-potent alchemist, or vise versa.

With books that dont overlap much, you will progress in each book about the same, making you a semi-potent mage and a semi-potent priest.

this has nothing to do with the realm skills. If you use a priest book in the divine realm the divine realm will go up and the divine book will go up. If you use a spell that is divine/alch in the water realm, and you have a higher alch book skill, the alch book skill will go up and the divine will stay the same.

so you have a choise, specialize or diversify. If your in this for the long haul (or are playing on expert) you are probably want to go with the non-overlapping books. This is because as you will cast more spells in each book, more often in expert than you would in normal or novice(battles are longer/you fizzle more etc). This means that your two bishops will be semi-potent/potent spell casters in two books each, effectivly giving you all four books(though you can only cast twice per combat, when you would have 4 with lots of magic users).

On to realms... these should work them selves up over time, so dont worry about it, unless you need points intoa realm to make a cretian spell more effective, or simply like pumping points into divine so you can cast heal all and death wish more effectivly, and dont care as much about having a lv 7 armorplate (or your mage/psi has that spell/realm)
