Generally, I pick 3 or 4 skills to raise per character and focus on them. This usually includes the characters primary skill (the one colored blue). The exception to this is the bard. His primary skill is communications, and I didn't see any point in pumping skill points into that.
Once a skill reaches 75, it can no longer be raised at level up, only through practice. This will start to happen with primary skills around level 10. At that point, you can pick secondary skills to start working on.
It's really nice to have a few characters with high mythology, so you can see the stats of monsters (it's frustrating when your mythology character goes unconscious, and suddenly your seeing ?/? instead of hps on monsters), and artifacts is handy for identifying stuff, and necessary to be able to use it.
