From what I've been reading, Fighters will always be better in combat than hybrid combat classes. My fighter typically goes twice per round, with 2-4 swings each at 20-40 damage per swing. If the critter is webbed, paralyzed or unconscious, he can easily do 50 damage per swing. Since he's a fighter, the only skills I've been improving are sword, close combat and shield. The only stat's I've been raising are strenght, vitality and dexterity.
Interesting note. If you right click on the shield skill, it mentions that it improves defense with shield, but also improves penetration when you attack. That may be why my fighter is seeing higher damage.
