Merge is the right idea, but make sure it is your Gadgeteer that is doing the merging, and that the items do in fact combine. Merging the doll and the box makes a jack in the box, but merging the box and a shiny plate for instance won't do anything.
Also, some of the more complicated require a certain level Gadgeteer to create.
