Oh, man, I played both of these so much! I never finished The City, but I spent a lot of time there. I did finish The Dungeon and I liked that one better (but I always wished that you could go back and forth). I loved the crude weather effects in The City (the rain and thunder) and The Dungeon was just a lot of fun.
I sure wished that they would have expanded this like they always promised. They said that there would be AR: The Palace, AR: The Arena, AR: The Wilderness and plenty of others. It showed that you could create great atmosphere (and even a sense of loneliness!) without massive graphics. Of course Wizardry 8 is a fine experience, but there was something about finding hidden doors or areas and suddenly being out of the elements of the City or finally getting into a Guild in the Dungeon.

For a while, I worked in a store that sold Atari ST and Commodore Amiga's and got to play Dungeon Master. I LOVED that game. Our manager would let us stay late at night and play as long as we locked up and we would take advantage of that all the time. Dungeon Master II for the PC was a big disappointment for me, though.
It was a disappointment, but I did play it. The original was one fine game, I have to say. It's really what made me get an Atari ST way back when. I loved experimenting with spells and gaining abilities. I loved finding out that you could use the environment to your advantage. I remember the first time I bashed a mummy by closing a door on him! What a surprise that was! I remember using a grate to get rid of a water elemental. I remember being able to use the tree creatures as food (even unlimited food in one area).
It's nice to hear about someone else loving these games as much as I did.
