Area effect spells are vital against these suckers. I didn't leave the monastery until 7th level and my mage had "Fireball"...it's a godsend out there on the road. Use Magic Missile and Fireball against them...not sure what the Psionic has.
I have a Bard in my party, and I got the Piercing Pipes right outside the Monastery...VERY valuable. I also have a Dracon, and that Acid Breath also comes in very handy as well.
Good luck! If you're not up for it yet, go back to the Monastery, rest around a bit and fight some more monsters until you level up and get some of those spells.
