If anyone has a particular fighter class that bites it, you probably have been ignoring the DEX/INT stats. Get them up to at least 50-60 when you can on level-up. Also, put points into the weapon type that they use first and foremost- not close combat, ranged, dual weild.
1 point of sword skill is worth 5 pts of close combat.
