Agreed on the Samurai...it takes a while for them to get good, but when they start getting more frequent Lightning Strikes, they rock. Since I'm toting Vi Domina around now, I'm using her for healing and "bless", and the ladies (Vi Domina and Liselle, my Elven Mage) both have the Amulets of Regeneration, so I don't have to worry about them too much except in the heat of a battle.
As far as raw damage power, spellcasters have it in this game. If it weren't for Liselle's magic casting, my party would have been toast long before. My fighter is just getting to where he can fork out some major damage, but the Mage (and the Bard with his instruments, especially those Piercing Pipes) make all the difference.
Bards are by far the best non-elite class; they level up quickly, can play those instruments (and with a priest casting "Stamina" on them each round, have virtually unlimited spells with them) and can wear special armor (like the Oberon Greaves in Arnika, with +8 AC and +10 to speed). My Felpurr Bard has a speed of 105 right now and an average AC of 14. He's virtually untouchable!
