I don't have anything against cheating (via character editors etc) and often do it for fun after beating a game for the first time. However, there is a better method in Wiz7...

Possible (very minor) Spoiler...

Make sure that you have a thief character in your party when you start the game. In the first city you come to, there are several merchants (I don't recall the names right off--been WAY too long since I last played through) that you can steal from. Start with the one with the basic gear, as he is the easiest to get items from. With successful steals, your skill in stealing goes up (awesome design at work here!) and you will be able to get more items & eventually expensive items from the magic shop & black market. In this manner, you increase both your thief's skills and you equip your party with nice gear for free. Obviously, this will require quitting/reloading whenever you are caught, which can be time-consuming, but it is a good way to get started in the game (if you have the patience for it).

Good Luck, and enjoy this excellent game!!!
