re: layered icons- i am all for them. i love the stuff that joerg has done. my goblin and orc icons are layered files. i've got some stuff i'm working on that are layered, just because it's easier that way. but, while i have it, i don't use photoshop. i use paintshop pro. it's easy for me to look at photoshop layered graphics in paintshop pro, but for some reason, colors sometimes get changed when i switch a file from .psp to .psd.

re: the rest-
.png hands down. i've been reading about people 'claiming' that .bmp has better color clarity. honestly, i can't tell the difference. i just know that .png files are smaller. whereas, you can pretty easily see the color deterioration in .jpg. (and 256 colors is too restrictive. you know, for .gif.)
