There is nothing wrong with 'cheating' a game-critical item like this. I keep saying this, but nobody seems to listen. What you consider cheating may be totally different from someone elses definition. The only rule is: play the game in the way YOU enjoy it, whether that involves cheating or not.
I'll tell you this: if I need stuff Identified and I haven't got enough lore for it, no way in hell am I going to pay 100 gp per Identify or wait until I get across a Scroll; I just cheat some Identify scrolls into my inventory. I'm not ashamed of it; it doesn't make me omnipotent in the game, it doesn't ruin the gaming experience, in fact, it increases my enjoyment of the game because it's so easy.
The important part here seems:
it doesn't matter how you play the game, as long as you enjoy it!! And since most people won't enjoy a hacked-up game where all characters wear Rings of Gaxx and have 25 in all stats anyway, you don't have to worry about it. Personally, I can get a hell of a lot more annoyed by a bunch of holier-than-thou cheat-police officers who walk about saying cheating is the devil, than by people who edit small things in their game to increase gaming pleasure.
Just my 2c anyway
