I daresay Yorick is completely wrong. Magic does not suck. Priests can cast spells. If he cannot understand it, he can call the priest spells miracles or prayers and the priest's spellbook a holy book. How do the people in Faerun die? Is it important? Don't let us be too materialistic in the fantasy world. Bards cannot cast spells? And why not! Let us remember TES Daggerfall where ANY class was able of magic to some extent. Is it wrong? Why?
The fantasy world is different from our world and it is good that it is. Sometimes, the computer games are flamed by some mentors that they bring brutality, that they cause murders in schools and so on. When could this flaming have some substance? If we kill people with machine guns in a contemporary city in the game. If we drive cars. If we do similar things. In the other words, if the game reflects OUR world, if the monsters CAN be identified with people around us. If the monsters are serviced by means of tools that EXIST around us. Isn't it better to fight with magical weapons? Isn't it better to cast spells? I think it is. The further is the game world from our world the better.
A good game should always be a fairy tale. It should never resemble a possible episode of our life. Every fairy tale is full of magical artifacts and magical effects.
