<font color = lightgreen>It isn't so much that the original X-Men were "weak" but the writers of the stories didn't have the time to consider all uses for various powers.
Consider Jean Grey's telekinesis. Not too terribly powerful, but extremely useful. Hold someone's eyes closed--they can't see. Study anatomy then squeeze their medulla oblongata--they fall unconscious from the pain. Squeeze shut their aorta for a few seconds then let it go--instant coronary thrombosis.
Cyclops' beam. How narrow can he focus it? What if he could focus into the width of a centimeter? A millimeter? Since his power seems to defy the laws of motion (his beam pushes out but doesn't push him backwards) he could stand on the deck of a ship, spread his beam out, and propel the ship. Also, studying the energy of his beams could lead to non-Newtonian motion.
I must admit, though, that Angel falls really short here. He can fly. [img]graemlins/erm.gif[/img] Ok. Other than tactical advantage that can't be used in interesting new ways.</font>
