I'm fairly certain that in the title defenses he didn't just fight against the European champ, in addition, his prior fights (when he talks with Adrian when on the rink) often have white fighters.
Tommy Morrison and McNeely, as well as Butterbean are the only well known American white boxers (now). Back in the 30's-60's, most of the fighters were white. Marciano, Dempsey, Schemeling, Blin, MildenBerger, Cooper, Hunsaker, Wepner (Rocky's inspiration), all were white fighters. Now the heavyweight title is held by a white guy, Vitali Klitcho (major SP). But still, boxing isn't really a white man's sport (in terms of racial representation) imo.
