I didn't like either one much, but I admire David Lynch's open directorial spirit, and the fact that he actually tried to do something that was at that time unfilmable. To say the least, Dune is an epic spectacle on a level that only D.W. Griffith could film.

Also, there are two extended prints of the '80's version of the film. One with Lynch's approval, the other without. The unapproved version says "Directed by Alan Smithee" which is a film industry code name directors can use if they feel that too much control has been taken from their hands in the finished product. Most of the time, the results indicate that it wasn't a good idea to put them in that position.
